Chelsea has agreed to pay £117m to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa.
The BBC reported this on Saturday. This fee is now the highest ever for the club based in west London.
It also marks the biggest amount ever paid for an English player.
Rogers, who is 23 years old, is expected to sign a six-year contract. Chelsea has an option to add one more year to that deal.
He will arrive in London for a medical on Monday after he finishes his international duties with England at the ongoing 2026 World Cup.
The £117m fee beats the £116m that Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson, another English midfielder, just weeks ago this summer. This makes Rogers the most expensive English player ever.
For Chelsea, this amount also goes beyond the £107m they spent to bring in Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez back in 2023. That had been their previous record.
Xabi Alonso, the new manager at Chelsea, is working on changing his team before the new Premier League season. Rogers is seen as a key signing for this plan.
Rogers has had a quick rise in his career. He started at Manchester City’s academy but found his form after moving to the Championship with Middlesbrough. Aston Villa signed him on February 1, 2024.
With Unai Emery as coach, Rogers improved a lot. He scored 21 goals in 85 league games and helped Villa win the Europa League last season.
He has also joined the senior England team, earning 21 caps and scoring one goal. He played in six matches during this summer’s World Cup.
