Christian Eriksen has officially left VfL Wolfsburg after both sides agreed to end his contract. This comes just three months after he collapsed during an international friendly.
The 34-year-old Denmark midfielder had a deal with the German second-tier club until June 2027. He asked for an early exit so he could return to Denmark and be nearer to his family.
Eriksen has not played in any competitive match since June. He collapsed on the pitch during Denmark’s game against Ukraine.
This incident happened five years after he suffered a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 against Finland. After that, doctors fitted him with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) which helped him return to his football career.
In a statement from the club on Wednesday, Eriksen shared his thanks and explained why he left.
“At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark,” Eriksen said. “I’m pleased that we were able to find a solution together.”
Wolfsburg's managing director for sport, Dieter Hecking, highlighted that Eriksen's future was entirely his choice.
“Despite his short time here, he has left a lasting impression on his team-mates, our staff and the fans,” Hecking said.
Eriksen joined Wolfsburg last year as a free agent after leaving Manchester United. In his one season with the German club, the 151-cap international played 34 matches. His career also includes great times at Ajax, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan, and Brentford.
Ending his contract early lets Eriksen think about the next steps in his life and career while being with his family.
