Coventry made history in the Premier League as they escaped the relegation zone with a 4-1 win against Newcastle on Monday.
Frank Lampard’s team is the first club in 127 years to win back-to-back matches in the English top flight right after losing their first four games without scoring.
Jack Rudoni scored a penalty early in the first half, giving Coventry their first-ever Premier League goal at the CBS Arena, their home since 2005.
Guinean forward Sidiki Cherif added to the Sky Blues’ lead after halftime.
Sven Botman managed to score for Newcastle, but late goals from Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni secured a jump from 19th to 14th place for Coventry.
Lampard’s squad got their first points of the season by defeating Nottingham Forest 1-0 before the international break.
This marked Coventry’s first win over Newcastle since 1999, boosting their chances to stay out of the relegation zone in their first season back in the Premier League since 2001.
They will aim for a third straight win when they visit struggling Tottenham on October 19.
A win would have pushed Newcastle into fourth place, but instead, they suffered their second loss in six league matches this season.
Matthias Jaissle’s squad wasted many chances in the first half, which cost them.
Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek gifted Coventry a penalty in the sixth minute when he dropped the ball and tripped Cherif while trying to clear it.
Joe Willock set up Harvey Barnes midway through the first half, finding space outside the Coventry box. Barnes had a close shot that went just wide.
Newcastle controlled possession, with Jacob Murphy shooting just over from distance. Matias Fernandez-Pardo had a shot cleared off the line by Bobby Thomas.
Thomas, after stopping Fernandez-Pardo once, made another great clearance right before halftime when Fernandez-Pardo rounded Carl Rushworth.
Coventry took full advantage of Thomas’s efforts and doubled their lead just three minutes into the second half.
Cherif, making his first Premier League start after joining from Fenerbahce this summer, scored a memorable goal, sending a strong shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
Botman pulled one back in the 70th minute, blasting a powerful shot past Rushworth from 20 yards out.
But Newcastle midfielder Joelinton, returning from injury, made a big mistake in the 81st minute.
His heavy touch near his own area let Simms take over with his first touch after coming off the bench. Simms’ deflected shot zipped past Hornicek.
Mfuni, on loan from Manchester City, capped off Coventry’s impressive performance with a long-range shot into the net in the 86th minute.
