Leeds thrashed Newcastle 4-1 on Monday, moving up to third place in the Premier League. This match marked the first defeat for Newcastle's manager Matthias Jaissle.
The game started with a Lewis Miley own goal, which set the tone. Jayden Bogle, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Noah Okafor all added to the score at Elland Road.
Newcastle had a good start under Jaissle, even after losing manager Eddie Howe and key players like Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes, and Sandro Tonali during the offseason.
Backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, Newcastle aimed to bring in young talents to replace those who left. But they struggled against a more experienced Leeds team.
Things went wrong for Newcastle early on. Within the first 20 minutes, Nico Gonzalez had to leave the game as a concussion substitute.
This left 18-year-old Sean Steur and 20-year-old Lewis Miley in the middle of the Newcastle midfield. Miley unfortunately had the last touch when Ao Tanaka’s strike deflected twice before going into the net.
Newcastle could not regain their composure as Leeds scored again just two minutes later. Calvert-Lewin jumped high to meet a cross from James Justin. His header hit Bogle and went into the bottom corner, giving Bogle the goal.
Leeds’ number nine didn’t wait long to score again, netting for the fifth straight league match at Elland Road. Calvert-Lewin pushed past Sven Botman and slid the ball under Newcastle's goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek.
Anton Stach had a chance to score a fourth early in the second half. He took advantage of a poor pass from Hornicek but sent the ball just wide.
Okafor made it 4-0 before the hour mark. He volleyed in from the edge of the box after Newcastle failed to clear a long throw.
Bazoumana Toure scored a late consolation goal in stoppage time for Newcastle, but the damage was already done.
This victory gives Daniel Farke’s team eight points from their first four matches, placing them behind only the defending champions Arsenal and Manchester City.
Newcastle stays on five points but drops to 12th place because of their negative goal difference.
