The Cross River State Government has shared exciting plans to grow the global appeal and financial benefits of Carnival Calabar. They want to focus on getting more people from the diaspora involved, making money from carnival events, and increasing tourism revenue before the 2026 edition.
Governor Bassey Otu announced these plans in Lagos during the launch of the theme for the 2026 Carnival Calabar. This will be the 21st edition of the festival, which is known as Africa’s biggest street party.
The 2026 carnival theme is: “Rethinking Our Collective Destiny.” The governor explained that this theme shows the need for everyone to work together and take responsibility for a better future for both Cross River State and Nigeria.
At the launch event, Otu said the government is working on a plan to stream carnival activities worldwide. This will create chances to earn money from the content produced.
He mentioned that this is part of a bigger goal to make the carnival a stronger economic platform that can attract international audiences and investments.
The governor also said they are encouraging Cross River indigenes living abroad to join in the festival. He wants them to support the Carnival Calabar brand globally and help with its growth through partnerships and investments.
Otu pointed out that the carnival is not just a cultural event. It has also become an important economic driver for the state. It creates opportunities for entrepreneurs, artisans, entertainers, and informal businesses.
He added that launching the carnival theme is not just about preparing for the event. It is an opening for new business growth, tourism development, and social connections.
“Meanwhile, for us in Cross River State, the Carnival theme unveiling goes beyond the symbolic ceremonial commencement of carnival activities. It is rather the opening of a vista of opportunity for the development and expansion of businesses, especially the informal sector; the creation of an enabling environment for home-coming and family bonding,” he said.
Otu also reflected on the 20th edition of the carnival held in 2025. He called it a big success that strengthened the state’s standing as a top tourism destination. He noted that the 32-day celebration highlighted creativity and attracted more local and international visitors.
According to the governor, the success of the last edition shows the great potential of tourism and the creative economy as sources of income and job creation for the state.
He praised sponsors, businesses, carnival bands, entertainers, and tourists for their support. He noted that their help was essential for making the event a success.
Otu shared that the state’s creative economy is being restructured. New tourism projects and attractions are being developed to boost economic activities, create jobs, and encourage tourists to return.
The governor emphasized that his administration is dedicated to making Cross River State a top tourism location in Nigeria and a strong player in the global cultural tourism scene.
He encouraged current sponsors and potential investors to keep supporting the festival. He assured them that they would gain more visibility and returns on their investment by partnering with Carnival Calabar.
He stated that the carnival is one of the best ways for brands to get exposure in Nigeria. It allows sponsors to connect directly with millions of participants, visitors, and viewers through various channels.
The 2026 edition aims to build on the successes of past years, mixing culture, entertainment, tourism, and commerce while showcasing Cross River State to a larger global audience.
