The Editor-in-Chief of PREMIUM TIMES, Musikilu Mojeed, will speak at the 10th Piauí International Journalism Festival in São Paulo, Brazil. Top newsroom editors from seven countries will discuss the struggles of running media organizations amid political, social, and institutional pressures.

The festival is set for 5 and 6 September at the Cinemateca Brasileira in São Paulo. This year's theme is "In the Eye of the Hurricane, Newsroom Captains Through the Storm."

Mr Mojeed is one of eight international newsroom leaders invited to the festival. He will join senior editors and former editors from some of the world's leading news organizations.

Daniel Bergamasco, the executive editor of Piauí and curator of the festival, invited Mr Mojeed personally.

In his invitation, Mr Bergamasco mentioned that the organizers chose newsroom leaders who had made "outstanding contributions at the helm of media organizations around the world."

"I became more familiar with your work while conducting research for the festival’s curation, and I was truly impressed," Mr Bergamasco wrote to Mr Mojeed.

The festival organizers explained that the sessions would look at what it means to lead newsrooms during tough political and social times.

According to the programme released by Piauí, Mr Mojeed will speak on Sunday, 6 September, in a session from 2 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.

He will be interviewed on stage by Angélica Santa Cruz of Piauí and Pedro Borges of Alma Preta, a Brazilian publication focusing on issues affecting Black communities.

The organizers mentioned in the festival programme that PREMIUM TIMES has investigated corruption in government, the social and environmental impacts of the oil industry, and police violence.

They also highlighted a 2017 invasion of the PREMIUM TIMES newsroom by police after a report on Nigeria’s then-chief of army staff.

Mojeed Joins Global Newsroom Leaders

Mr Mojeed will share the stage with leaders from news organizations that have played key roles in major international investigations and public interest journalism.

PREMIUM TIMES has been involved in significant international investigations, including the Panama Papers and the Paradise Papers.

Other invited newsroom leaders include Alan Rusbridger, who was editor-in-chief of The Guardian from 1995 to 2015; Dean Baquet, executive editor of The New York Times from 2014 to 2022; Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic; Carlos Dada, founder and director of El Faro in El Salvador; Olga Rudenko, editor-in-chief of The Kyiv Independent; Manisha Pande, editorial director of India’s Newslaundry; and Luz Mely Reyes, director-general of Venezuela’s Efecto Cocuyo and a columnist for El País.

The festival will also host Brazilian journalists and other public thinkers, including economist Persio Arida.

This event is special for Piauí as the magazine celebrates its 20th anniversary. The organizers describe the magazine as a non-profit long-form journalism outlet mainly supported by an endowment fund.

The festival programme states that the gathering will bring together journalists and students from all over Brazil. International guests will share their experiences leading newsrooms during difficult times.

The sessions will have simultaneous translation. The interviews will be recorded and made available online after the event.

Mr Mojeed's selection highlights PREMIUM TIMES' strong focus on investigative and public interest journalism in Nigeria. This includes reporting on corruption, governance, the oil and gas industry, human rights, and abuses by security agencies.
