Spain defender Marc Cucurella has shown his respect for World Cup-winning coach Luis de la Fuente by getting a tattoo of him. This comes after helping the national team win the trophy.
Cucurella was part of the Spain team that beat Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final this month. De la Fuente led the team to their latest victory.
The Real Madrid player, who moved from Chelsea for £52m in June, shared the tattoo on social media.
The tattoo shows a portrait of De la Fuente holding the World Cup trophy and features the number 26.
According to BBC Sport on Wednesday, Cucurella wrote, "Promise kept," while sharing pictures and videos of the tattoo process.
He had promised to get this tribute after Spain’s win. De la Fuente joked after the final that he expected Cucurella to fulfill his promise.
“I’ve already told them, ‘Did you make a mistake?’” De la Fuente said at his post-match news conference.
“They did, but they’ll enjoy it. I’m not so terribly ugly that they will need to put it somewhere nobody can see it. But it makes me laugh and I am proud they keep their promises.”
Cucurella played a key role for Spain during the tournament. He was known for his personality on and off the pitch.
He carried his wife’s pyjama top as a good luck charm throughout the World Cup. He also said his long, curly hair helps his child recognize him during matches.
Now, the new tattoo will remind him of Spain’s World Cup victory and his bond with the coach who guided the team to success.
