The DAM Foundation has increased its support for local basketball through building facilities, organizing competitions, and welfare programs. These efforts aim to create chances for young players across Nigeria.

The foundation is linked to Dr Mustapha Abdullahi. He believes that ongoing investment in grassroots development is key to building a strong future for Nigerian basketball players.

Abdullahi has been part of basketball for over ten years. He started as a player and later supported grassroots initiatives. He mentioned that the challenges in the sport at higher levels cannot be solved without focusing on young talents.

He stated that young players need access to good facilities, regular competitions, mentorship, and other chances to grow their skills.

Abdullahi’s involvement in basketball goes back to before he became the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria. He played for teams in Kano State and has supported basketball clubs and communities at the grassroots level.

In Kano, he helped build a basketball court and sponsored a tournament, covering all the logistics needed for the event.

The foundation also holds an annual basketball championship in Okene, Kogi State, every December.

He pointed out that Nigeria needs a better system for finding, developing, and keeping young basketball talents. This is crucial for making real progress in the sport.

According to the foundation, the Okene championship gives players a chance to compete, gain experience, and draw attention. It also unites communities through basketball.

Their support goes beyond the court. They offer scholarships, medical help, business grants, job assistance, and welfare support for young people and vulnerable community members.

In Abuja, Abdullahi has also backed the Great Vibes Basketball Foundation. This support includes help with players’ welfare and personal issues.

The foundation says its approach understands that developing athletes involves more than just performance. Player welfare also deserves focus.

Abdullahi has pointed out that infrastructure is a vital part of grassroots development. Good courts give young people places to train, compete, and improve their skills.

He believes grassroots basketball should not just be seen as a way to reach elite levels. It should also serve as a platform for youth engagement, education, work, and other productive chances.
