Super Falcons midfielder Deborah Abiodun has shared her feelings about her recent injury. She wrote, “From World Cup heartbreak to this, 2026 must really be that year” in a post on Snapchat.
The 22-year-old Nigerian player will miss the rest of the 2026 National Women’s Soccer League season after getting injured this week.
Abiodun has moved from the 45-day injury list to the season-ending injury list due to this latest issue.
She has played in nine matches this season for the Spirit, with four of those as starts. Overall, she has spent 320 minutes on the pitch. This injury comes at a tough time for Abiodun, who has had a mixed year with the Super Falcons.
At the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, Abiodun played four matches. Unfortunately, Nigeria lost 3-2 to Cameroon in the Quarter-Finals.
She also featured in the 2-1 defeat against South Africa during the World Cup Qualifiers Play-off, which ended Nigeria’s hopes of hosting the main women’s tournament.
Abiodun joined Washington Spirit in January 2025. Before that, she was on loan at Dallas Trinity and returned to the capital side in August 2025.
So far, she has made 21 appearances for the Spirit, scoring one goal and providing one assist.
This injury is a blow for Washington Spirit. They are currently second in the NWSL standings with 43 points, just two points behind league leaders Gotham FC.
The team aims to build on their second-place finishes in 2024 and 2025 as they chase their first title since winning it in 2021.
