Drama Over Wedding Food Sparks Online Debate Between Bride and Mother-in-Law

A video has gone viral showing a fight between a bride and her mother-in-law over food at a wedding. This incident reportedly led to the end of their marriage. Many Nigerians have mixed feelings about who was wrong in this drama.

The video started trending on Friday. It was originally shown on July 20 by Independent Television and Radio in Edo State.

The incident happened during a wedding reception when food ran out. A family from the groom’s side arrived late, leaving only the food the bride had set aside for her parents.

According to the report, the groom’s mother asked the bride if she could share some of the leftover food with the guests who had traveled a long way. However, the bride said no.

The report went on to say that when the mother-in-law tried to serve the food herself, the bride took it back and poured it into the cooler. This led to the older woman slapping the bride. The bride then slapped her mother-in-law back.

The groom stayed calm during the reception but later wanted to end the marriage just two days after the wedding.

A lawyer, Franka Osie, explained in the same report that Nigerian law does not allow for a divorce just two days after getting married.

Another lawyer confirmed that under Nigeria’s Matrimonial Causes Act, couples generally cannot file for divorce until they have been married for at least two years. But a court might allow a divorce earlier in special cases involving hardship or serious issues. Sometimes, annulment could also be an option.
