The Ebonyi State Executive Council has said it will send bills to the Ebonyi State House of Assembly. These bills will regulate house rents and fees that estate agents charge in the state. The council also wants to control the sale of metal and electrical scraps.

Ikeuwah Omebeh, the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Information, shared this news on Tuesday. He spoke to reporters after the council meeting at the Government House in Abakaliki. A video clip showed Mr. Omebeh making this announcement.

The Commissioner said the new laws would limit the “arbitrary” charges that house agents can impose and the rent increases that landlords can demand. He stressed that if the House approves these laws, agents will not be able to charge more than two percent of the total rent paid by tenants in the state.

Mr. Omebeh said this effort is to protect tenants from high charges. He wants to ensure that only qualified and registered agents follow the law.
