Ekiti Governor Wants to Boost Tourism and Arts

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, has promised to use his position to make Ekiti a key place for cultural tourism and the creative economy. He believes this will change the lives of many people in Nigeria and Africa.

Oyebanji also encouraged Ekiti youths to use their talents and creativity to create jobs, businesses, and wealth. This, he said, could speed up economic growth in the state.

The governor spoke through the Deputy Governor, Mrs Monisade Afuye, in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday. They launched the 2026 edition of the Ekiti State Festival of Arts and Culture, known as EKIFEST. This event will take place at Fajuyi Pavilion, Ado Ekiti, with the theme, "Continuity, The Pathway to Ensuring Prosperity."

EKIFEST 2026 is scheduled for August 11 to 15 in the state capital. The festival is expected to draw culture and tourism lovers, as well as creative entrepreneurs, to Ekiti.

The governor highlighted that developing creativity and talent is key to building businesses and creating jobs, especially given the economic challenges facing the country. He said, "Our vision is clear, we want Ekiti to become Nigeria’s foremost destination for cultural tourism and one of Africa’s leading creative hubs."

He added, "We are building infrastructure, strengthening institutions, supporting our creative talents, expanding opportunities for young entrepreneurs and creating an environment where culture contributes meaningfully to our economy."

Oyebanji assured local artists, art exhibitors, and those in creative businesses of consistent government support. He promised patronage to help them thrive and contribute to economic growth.

He emphasized the importance of EKIFEST for youth development, saying, "To our young people, this festival belongs to you. Your creativity is your wealth. Your ideas can create jobs. Your talents can build businesses. Your imagination can transform communities. The creative economy is no longer the future, it is already here."

He continued, "As we celebrate EKIFEST, let us remember that the true measure of any society is not only in its roads and buildings, but also in how faithfully it preserves its heritage and how boldly it empowers its people."

Oyebanji stated that the 2026 EKIFEST would strengthen the state’s economy, boost investments, enhance unity, and create opportunities for youths and those in the creative sector.

The Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Prof. Rasak Bakare, praised Oyebanji for heavily investing in arts and culture. He described EKIFEST as a celebration of Ekiti’s rich cultural heritage and traditions, which he said are unique across Nigeria.

Bakare stressed that culture is more than just entertainment. He said it is a great way to build social bonds, create a welcoming environment, and promote love and harmony among people from different backgrounds.

He noted, "This year’s EKIFEST will feature a cultural parade, command performances, traditional competitions, and talent showcases that highlight the cultural diversity of Ekiti people. The Biodun Oyebanji-led government understands that culture can only be preserved when it is practiced and passed on to future generations."

Bakare also mentioned that under Oyebanji’s leadership, one of the fastest-growing sectors generating jobs and attracting investments is arts and culture.
