Police officers from the Ekiti State Command, seen in a viral video during a clash with a motorcyclist, are facing disciplinary action at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The Police Complaint Response Unit shared this update on X on Tuesday. This follows a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu.

The update, linked to complaint tracking number CRU100953, stated, "The officers in the viral video attached to Ekiti State Police Command are now at the Police Complaint Response Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja, undergoing disciplinary actions as directed by the IGP, Tunji Disu."

This action comes after a complaint was lodged with the Ekiti State Police Command on October 6. Representatives from the Biker Association, Federal University Oye-Ekiti chapter, reported extortion and intimidation of one of its members.

In a statement on October 7, the command said a police patrol team stopped the biker while he was riding alone from Itapa to Ikole-Ekiti. They demanded money in a way the complainants found unacceptable.

The command mentioned that they identified the officers involved and took them into custody for questioning. This is part of the investigation into allegations of extortion, intimidation, disobedience to lawful orders, and other unprofessional conduct.

The investigation has been moved to the State Police Headquarters in Ado-Ekiti for a fair and thorough examination.

Falade Micheal, the Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, has ordered that the officers face the right disciplinary procedures according to police rules, depending on the investigation's outcome.

The command emphasized, "The Commissioner of Police strongly condemns all forms of extortion, intimidation, abuse of authority and other actions that can damage public trust or tarnish the Nigeria Police Force's image."

They also stated that no police officer has the right to demand or collect money from anyone while doing their official duties.

The viral video shows a confrontation between a motorcyclist and a police officer over a roadworthiness check.

In the video, the rider seems to resist a demand for ₦20,000. The officer is seen talking to him next to his motorcycle.

Text accompanying the video also claims that the officer threatened the rider during the encounter.

So far, the police have not revealed the outcome of the investigation or what penalties the officers might face.
