Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, announced on Tuesday that the state has hired 8,358 workers in the last four years. These new workers are in the state civil service, local governments, and security outfits.

The governor also revealed that Ekiti State generated N88.4 billion as Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) during this period. He shared these details while giving the state of the state address at the Ekiti State House of Assembly in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

Mr Oyebanji said that the economy of Ekiti State is showing great promise. He highlighted that a summary of Ekiti’s GDP from a recent National Bureau of Statistics report shows that the state’s GDP grew from N2.4 trillion in 2019 to N4.6 trillion in 2023, marking a 90 percent increase.

He mentioned that projections indicate that Ekiti’s GDP is now close to N8.8 trillion. “This has moved Ekiti from the 33rd position to the 28th since the APC took over the state. Our contribution to the national GDP also grew from 1.3 percent to 1.6 percent. Our economy is mainly driven by trade and agriculture, which contribute 60 percent overall,” he said.

On the new employment in the past four years, the governor noted, “Since we took office, we have hired qualified people for key positions. The Civil Service Commission hired 41 senior officers in 2025, while the Office of Establishment and Service Matters brought in 340 junior officers.

“Additionally, the Local Government Service Commission employed 774 people to fill vacancies in 2025. We have also hired 6,530 teachers for public primary and secondary schools. This includes 3,530 for the Teaching Service Commission and 3,000 for the State Universal Basic Education Board.

“In the security sector, over 600 personnel joined the Ametokun Corps and the newly established Agro Marshal Corps. The Ekiti State Traffic Management Agency added 73 traffic officers,” he explained.

Discussing the state’s IGR, Mr Oyebanji stated that when he took over in 2022, the state's average IGR was around N650 million to N700 million monthly. This totaled about N8.7 billion in 2022 and increased to N12 billion by the end of 2023.

“The trend continued in 2024 with a reconciled figure of N17.6 billion. In 2025, we reached N27.1 billion. As of the last reconciliation in June this year, we achieved N15.6 billion and expect to reach N32 billion by the end of the year, averaging N2.6 billion monthly.

“The yearly growth was 38 percent in 2023, 47 percent in 2024, 53 percent in 2025, and about 60 percent in 2026. Over the last four years, we generated N88.4 billion as IGR.

“Independent data from the Joint Revenue Board confirmed that 2025 was a remarkable year for Ekiti’s revenue. The state increased its IGR by 62.13 percent, outpacing all other states in the South-west and 26 other States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“We have improved our share of the national IGR and now fund a third of our total expenditures from our IGR. We aim to keep this momentum,” he said.

The governor credited these successes to the restructuring of institutions, better tax administration, and an improved business environment. “All this was made possible by reorganizing institutions, transforming tax administration, expanding the tax net, and enhancing the business environment.

“For this reason, we have focused on trade, investment, and agriculture, as they are our strengths. With our investments in aviation and tourism, we hope to further diversify our economy in this new term,” he concluded.
