Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has praised Mbekezile Mbokazi as the best player for South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This comes after Bafana Bafana's early exit, losing 1-0 to Canada in the Round of 32.
Mbokazi, who plays for Chicago Fire FC, had a strong game in the defense. He kept Canada’s attack at bay for most of the match until Stephen Eustáquio scored late, sending Canada into the Round of 16.
During his comments on SuperSport, Troost-Ekong highlighted Mbokazi’s performance, saying he stood out among all the players in the South African team.
"I think it says a lot to say that Mbokazi was the best player on the South Africa side. I think Okon also spent a lot of time on the ball," he said.
Troost-Ekong also noted that South Africa's cautious play in the second half hurt them. Bafana Bafana became more attacking in the last 30 minutes but could not score when it mattered most.
"I think in the second half there were opportunities towards the last half hour; they opened up to be a little more attacking-minded. They were waiting to see what would happen in extra time and I think that cost them today," he said.
The former Nigeria international pointed out that Mbokazi's transfer from Orlando Pirates to Chicago Fire FC during the winter transfer window significantly boosted his growth as a player. He believes that playing regularly in the MLS before the World Cup helped sharpen Mbokazi's skills.
"The step-up for him to the MLS has helped to continue his development in a year that is a World Cup year. It makes sure that he is playing and I think after this tournament, he can look back and see this is what he learned," Troost-Ekong said.
