El-Kanemi Warriors showed they are one of Nigeria's best cup teams on Saturday. They beat Ikorodu City 1-0 to win the 2026 President Federation Cup. This victory also secures a spot for them in next season's CAF Confederation Cup.

A calm penalty by Muktar Ismail in the 19th minute was the game-changer at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba. With this win, the Maiduguri club has now lifted the Federation Cup four times, following victories in 1991, 1992, and 2024.

The win stopped Ikorodu City from having a fairy tale ending to their impressive season. They had just been promoted to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) and were aiming for their first major trophy and a chance to play in Africa.

Ikorodu City had a strong season, almost finishing in the top three of the league. But El-Kanemi's experience in knockout games made the difference this time.

El-Kanemi started the match well, controlling most of the early play. In the 19th minute, they earned a penalty. Ismail took the kick and sent the Ikorodu goalkeeper the wrong way to put his team ahead.

For the rest of the first half, El-Kanemi kept the ball and frustrated Ikorodu City's efforts to attack. The “Oga Boys” only managed a few chances near goal.

After the break, Ikorodu City tried to push for an equaliser. But El-Kanemi stayed strong in defense, closing down spaces and protecting their narrow lead.

Despite the late pressure from Ikorodu City, El-Kanemi held on to win the Federation Cup again. This victory adds to El-Kanemi Warriors' strong history in Nigeria's oldest football competition. With their win in 2024, they have now taken two of the last three titles, proving they are among the top teams in knockout football.

Winning this cup also gives El-Kanemi Warriors Nigeria's final spot in the 2026/27 CAF Confederation Cup. This gives them another chance to compete on the African stage.

For Ikorodu City, this loss marks a sad end to a great season. Just two seasons after moving up to the NPFL, they surprised many by reaching their first national cup final. They beat big teams like Enyimba and Nasarawa United along the way.

Though they leave Asaba without a trophy, their journey to the final and strong performances this season have made Ikorodu City one of Nigeria's most promising football clubs.
