He is also the spiritual leader of the Tijjaniyyah Sufi order in Nigeria. He is a well-known economist, banker, and public thinker. He used to be the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria before becoming Emir.

He was first crowned the 14th Emir in 2014. In May 2024, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reinstated him as the 16th Emir.

As Grand Khalifah, he guides millions of followers in Nigeria and West Africa.

He comes from the respected Royal Sullubawan Dabo dynasty and is the grandson of the 11th Emir of Kano, Khalifah Muhammadu Sanusi I.

While at the Central Bank of Nigeria, he gained international recognition. He won the 2010 Central Bank Governor of the Year award due to his reforms against corruption in banking.

In 2019, he was named a UN Sustainable Development Goals Advocate. He speaks out for women's education, child welfare, and fighting poverty.

Emir Sanusi is also known for his intelligence. He holds degrees in Economics and Shari’ah law. He even went back to school to finish a degree in Law at Northwest University, Kano.

He is also known for his love for learning. After getting his PhD in Law from the University of London, he enrolled in law as a 200-level student at Northwest University, Kano. He did this to inspire both young and old to pursue education.
