The Enugu East Senatorial Zone has thrown its weight behind the re-election of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Peter Mbah in the 2027 general elections.
This support was announced during a solidarity rally called “Ofu Obi Rally for Tinubu and Mbah,” which took place at Okpara Square in Enugu.
The zone, which includes Enugu East, Enugu North, Enugu South, Isi-Uzo, Nkanu East, and Nkanu West Local Government Areas, also donated N300 million to help Mbah’s re-election campaign.
Senator Kelvin Chukwu, who represents Enugu East Senatorial District, moved the motion to adopt Tinubu as the preferred presidential candidate for a second term. Mr Nnolim Nnaji, who represents Nkanu East/Nkanu West Federal Constituency, seconded the motion.
For Mbah's second term, the motion was moved by Mr Iloabuchi Aniagu, a member of the Enugu State House of Assembly, and Mr Anthony Mbah, who represents Nkanu East State Constituency, seconded it.
At the rally, former Senate President Sen. Ken Nnamani praised Mbah as a visionary leader capable of bringing change. Nnamani emphasized that strong leadership and investment in education are key to development, citing China as an example of effective governance.
Nnamani also commended Mbah’s Smart Green Schools initiative and encouraged residents to support the governor’s plans for development. He said Mbah has shown he can lead with a clear vision and effectively implement policies.
Former Governor of old Anambra State, Sen. Jim Nwobodo, spoke next, stating that Mbah deserves another term to build on his achievements. “We have no other governorship candidate in Nkanu land and Enugu State other than Peter Mbah. He must complete another four years in office,” Nwobodo said.
Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the Secretary to the Enugu State Government, stated that members of the State Executive Council and political appointees are solidly behind the governor. He said the rally shows just a part of the support Mbah has across the state and expressed hope that Enugu would excel under his leadership.
Nnaji, on behalf of the House of Representatives members from the zone, noted that the endorsement was based on Mbah’s performance and governance style. “We are here not because Peter Mbah is our brother. We are here to celebrate performance, good governance and transformational leadership,” he said.
Nnaji also urged eligible voters to register and collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) before the 2027 elections. Earlier, Chief Okey Ogbodo, the Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, called for unity among party members and stakeholders in the state.
He urged supporters to stay peaceful, focused, and committed to turning the growing support for Tinubu and Mbah into victory in 2027. Ogbodo pointed out that Enugu State has gained from Mbah’s connection with the Federal Government and his commitment to good leadership.
In response, Mbah thanked the Enugu East Senatorial Zone for the endorsement, calling it a vote of confidence in his administration. He recalled that his administration started with a vision to transform Enugu State and create opportunities for the future.
Mbah highlighted his administration's key achievements, which include the establishment of Smart Green Schools, reforms in primary healthcare, development of modern transport systems, purchasing Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, and revitalizing public facilities.
He also mentioned plans to start free school feeding in public schools by September 2026. The governor expressed gratitude for the people’s support and urged them to keep the momentum going by supporting continuity in 2027.
Mbah advised voters to stay alert and make informed choices during the elections. The rally also showcased cultural performances from the five local government areas in the senatorial zone.
