A family in Jalingo, Taraba State, is asking sports betting companies to shut down the betting accounts of a young man named Paul Matudi. They are worried about his alleged gambling addiction.

The family said Paul’s betting has become too much. They fear it is affecting his schoolwork, money matters, and the feelings of his family.

This request was made in a letter dated 30 October. It was sent to the managers of betting companies in Jalingo and Ardo-Kola Local Government Areas.

The letter was signed by Abraham Matudi, who spoke for the family. He asked the betting companies to quickly freeze or permanently block Paul Matudi’s accounts to stop any further betting.

"The situation is affecting Paul’s ability to concentrate on his education and exercise control over his betting activities," the family wrote in the letter.

The family also called on betting companies to put in place responsible gambling rules, especially for customers who might be under 18 or showing signs of gambling problems.

They made it clear that they would not take responsibility for any financial losses or issues that come up from betting on the accounts after they request for them to be closed.

"We will not accept responsibility for any financial losses or other consequences arising from continued betting activities after the formal request for account closure," the letter said.

Abraham also asked the companies to share this letter with other betting outlets in the two local government areas. This way, they can make sure the request is seen by all the right people.

The family is looking forward to the companies working with them and confirming when the accounts have been shut down.

This appeal comes at a time when many are worried about how sports betting is affecting young Nigerians. They are especially concerned about the impact on education, financial health, and family ties.
