Fatodu calls for more help to boost swimming

The President of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation, Lekan Fatodu, has said that the high cost of swimming could stop young talents from growing in the country. He is asking for more support from everyone involved to help the sport.

Fatodu made this statement while the federation is working to improve swimming in Nigeria. This includes the ongoing technical coaching course by the International Olympic Committee in Lagos.

"The fact remains that swimming is an expensive sport, and what we need is commitment from the government, the federation, parents and other stakeholders," Fatodu said.

He also asked all involved to work together to bring in sponsorship for swimming development programs.

"With the right level of commitment and collaboration, we can attract sponsorship and develop programmes dedicated to different categories of swimmers," he added.

Fatodu mentioned that the federation will keep giving chances to young swimmers through its development programs. He stressed the need to spot talents early and help them grow.

Thirty-five Nigerian coaches are taking part in the six-day program. This program aims to improve coaching standards and build Nigeria’s swimming talent pool.

Nigeria recently won 35 medals at the Africa Zone 2 Swimming Championships in Dakar, Senegal. The country claimed 17 gold, 14 silver, and four bronze medals.

Fatodu said ongoing support from stakeholders is very important. This support will help Nigeria’s swimming talents grow from the grassroots to the elite level.
