Nigeria’s new men’s 100m champion, Favour Ashe, is focused on winning a medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. He recently reclaimed the national title at the trials held in Lagos, as reported by PUNCH Sports Extra.
Ashe won the men’s 100m final on Tuesday. This victory marks his second national title and confirms his position as one of Nigeria’s top sprint talents ahead of the Games.
The sprinter has had some ups and downs since he first showed promise as a bright star in Nigerian sprinting. He said this latest win is a message to those who doubted him and gives him a confidence boost for the international season.
“I’ve made the statement here and I have more to make. This one is for people to feel that I still got it. The next one is going to silence the critics,” Ashe told Making of Champions after the race.
Preparing for the Commonwealth Games
After his success in Lagos, Ashe plans to compete in several meets in Europe. He sees these events as key to his preparation for the Commonwealth Games, which is his main goal this season.
“I will be out to Europe to have like two or three meets before the Commonwealth Games and that is my main target this season. Just a medal and I believe I can get a medal,” he said.
The Commonwealth Games will happen in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2. Nigeria is expected to announce its final athletics team soon.
Winning the national title is a big boost for Ashe, who feels this victory has helped restore his confidence ahead of major championships.
“I just needed a win to give me motivation and I believe my confidence is high now.”
Ashe’s strong performance at the national trials strengthens his chances for a spot on Team Nigeria for the Commonwealth Games. He hopes to compete against some of the best sprinters from the Commonwealth and earn a place on the podium.
