Firefighters find 52-year-old man dead in well in Kwara

A 52-year-old man, Alaba Ayeni, has been found dead in a well in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State.

The Kwara State Fire Service announced this in a statement released on Tuesday by its Public Relations Officer, Hassan Adekunle. They said firefighters pulled Ayeni's body from a well near Lamp Bearers Islamic School, off Asa-Dam Road, Ilorin.

The Fire Service got a distress call about the incident and arrived at the scene around 8:42 am. They quickly began the recovery operation.

The agency said, "Our firefighters commenced a recovery operation and successfully recovered the body of the deceased, identified as Alaba Ayeni, aged 52."

The Fire Service noted that they are still trying to find out how Ayeni ended up in the well. They mentioned that local children found him and told the adults nearby.

"According to information gathered during the operation, children in the community discovered that the man was inside the domestic well and immediately reported the situation to elders in the vicinity," the statement said.

They added that the well is close to where the deceased lived.

After recovering the body, it was given to the police for further action.

"The body was formally handed over to DPO Bolaji of Budo-Nuhu Police Station, Nigeria Police Force, for further necessary action," the Fire Service said.

The Chief Fire Officer, Alabi Muhammed, spoke about the incident. He showed concern for the death and asked residents to be careful around domestic wells and other open water sources.

Muhammed advised residents to secure and cover domestic wells in residential areas to prevent accidents.

He also urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to ensure that children are not left unattended near wells, drainage channels, and other dangerous areas.

The Fire Service expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and the community. They also reaffirmed their commitment to responding quickly to emergencies and protecting lives and property in the state.
