Five suspects, including a former police officer, have been ordered to be held in custody by a Delta State High Court. They are linked to the killing of singer Oghenemine Mene Ogidi, known as OG Millan, after a shooting incident in Effurun, Delta State, on April 26.
The young singer, 28 years old, went to Effurun Motor Park to collect a waybill from Yenagoa in Bayelsa State. According to reports, park operators became suspicious of the parcel he was receiving and insisted it be opened.
Mr Ogidi was resistant at first, which raised their concerns. Eventually, when he agreed to their request, a Beretta pistol and four bullets were discovered inside the parcel.
The shocking moment of his killing was filmed live. In the video, the late singer was heard saying he would share everything. “I will tell you everything. My friends deceived me,” he repeated as he sat on the ground.
Despite his pleas, one of the armed officers from the Effurun Area Command was seen loading his rifle and then shot him dead.
This incident drew a lot of anger from Nigerians, who are calling for justice and accountability. Many are demanding that the officers involved be prosecuted without delay.
The suspects, including former Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman, appeared in High Court 5 in Asaba. They have been sent to the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Centre until the next court session.
The other suspects are Onoloko Dauroupamo, Okoh Kelechi, Goodluck Kingsley, and Omonigho Ahweyevu. Human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu shared updates on Facebook, stating they were charged under number DTHC/ASB/CR/M/66c/2026 and will remain in custody for their trial.
Gwamnishu also mentioned that the case file is now with the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice. Before their court appearance, Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, released a statement.
He said the incident happened after officers received reliable information that the deceased was trying to waybill a parcel with a Beretta pistol and ammunition. “The police officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure, fired his weapon, leading to the death of the suspect,” he stated.
Edafe added that Mr Usman has been taken into custody and moved to Force Headquarters in Abuja. He will face the Force Disciplinary Committee.
On April 29, the Nigerian Police Force announced the dismissal of the officers involved in the shooting. Deputy Commissioner of Police Anthony Placid confirmed this in a statement, saying the Force Disciplinary Committee found that Mr Usman had grossly violated Force Order 237 and other rules about using firearms.
