The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and TopTier Sports Management have announced a special Legends Football Match to honor Nigeria’s famous mid-1990s football generation. This match is set for 8 November at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos. It is part of the CANEX WKND 2026 program and will bring together football stars from Nigeria, Africa, and beyond.
This event will celebrate 30 years since Nigeria’s historic 1996 Atlanta Olympic victory. It will also honor the players who won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and represented Nigeria at the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
Temwa Gondwe, Director of Creatives and Diaspora at Afreximbank, said this initiative aims to celebrate the achievements of a generation that changed how people view African football. He also mentioned this is a chance to spark new discussions about the future of sports and the creative economy.
“The 1996 Super Eagles did more than win Olympic gold; they re-wrote the global narrative, proving to the world that African talent is an unstoppable force,” Mr Gondwe said.
He added that the Legends Game would show the connection between sports, entertainment, and culture. It also provides a platform to discuss how to better support African athletes and creatives globally.
Chichi Nwoko, Founder and CEO of TopTier Sports Management, said the initiative honors the players and looks at how to better support athletes during and after their careers. “Thirty years ago, a generation of Nigerian footballers showed the world what African talent was capable of. The Legends Football Game is our way of saying thank you to them, and our chance to ask harder questions: what are we building for this generation and the next?” Ms Nwoko said.
She stressed the need to create opportunities for African athletes to have lasting careers, both on and off the field. “This is a huge gap that must be addressed. That’s what this partnership with Afreximbank seeks to achieve.”
Amokachi Calls for Better Support for Legends
Former Super Eagles striker Daniel Amokachi, a key player from that era, echoed the importance of this initiative. Speaking at the unveiling at the Lagos Continental Hotel, Amokachi said the Legends Game would celebrate the 1994-96 generation and reflect on the impact of players who helped put Nigeria on the football map.
“Afreximbank and TopTier Sports Management have come up with a Legends Game to celebrate the 1994-96 generation of footballers in Nigeria and across the continent,” he said. But Amokachi believes this event should lead to more than just memories.
He urged companies to use their social responsibility programs to create sustainable welfare for former footballers and athletes. “The corporate social responsibility of having a pension scheme for footballers, not only footballers but athletes generally, is something that is done everywhere in the world,” he said.
“Ninety-nine percent of my colleagues from my generation are struggling. Only a few of us are doing a bit well, and if we had that kind of support, it would definitely go a long way.” Amokachi said media and corporate support is vital for the success of the November event.
“There are a lot of faces missing today because this is a Nigerian and African legends’ event. We need everybody to come on board to help make this a very memorable first week of November,” he said.
Emotional Reunion for Golden Generation
The announcement led to a touching reunion at the Lagos Continental Hotel, where Amokachi was joined by other stars like Mutiu Adepoju, Garba Lawal, Alloy Agu, Ben Iroha, Finidi George, and Victor Ikpeba. They shared stories, laughed over old dressing-room moments, and remembered the teams that defined a successful period in Nigerian football.
The 1994 team won Nigeria’s second Africa Cup of Nations title in Tunisia and reached the round of 16 at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States. Two years later, Nigeria’s Olympic team, featuring many of the same players, shocked the world by winning the men’s football gold medal in Atlanta after defeating Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina.
The former players praised the initiative and stressed the need for more programs that recognize their generation and support Nigeria’s sporting legends.
Bet9ja Named Headline Sponsor
Bet9ja has been announced as the headline sponsor of the Legends Football Match. The organizers are calling on more companies to support this initiative. They said the match will be part of CANEX WKND 2026, Afreximbank’s platform for promoting Africa’s creative and cultural industries.
They also mentioned that the event will help position Lagos as a key destination for sports, entertainment, and creative activities. It aims to attract football fans, creatives, media organizations, and international visitors.
