Tyson Fury has confirmed that his long-awaited heavyweight fight with British-Nigerian Anthony Joshua will happen at Madison Square Garden in New York. This announcement clears up months of questions about where the fight would take place.
The former world heavyweight champion shared the news on Instagram with a poster of himself and Joshua in front of the New York City skyline. But he didn't include a date with the post.
“What a place NYC, and what a venue MSG, and what a fight Fury vs AJ, the land of opportunity,” Fury wrote.
“What a weekend away for the lads on the piss in NYC. Iconic! Not long now guys.”
Joshua was not mentioned in the post. As of now, neither he nor his promoter, Matchroom Boxing, has confirmed this news.
The fight is expected to take place in November, with November 20 being the target date. Both fighters signed contracts with Turki Alalshikh, who is the chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority.
Joshua originally wanted the fight to happen in the United Kingdom. But Netflix and Alalshikh pushed for the fight to be held in America. This led his promoter, Eddie Hearn, to negotiate again to move the fight to the U.S.
Hearn said Joshua's team still prefers to fight in the UK but knows they need to make it work for everyone involved.
“We don’t want to do the fight in the US, but we also understand it has to work for everybody,” Hearn said.
“We’ve set out our position, mainly in concern to the tax situation that will deplete his net purse by going to America, which can be rectified and I think they’re happy to do that.”
“We will need to make a decision this week. They’ve replied, they have our terms. It’s up to them,” Hearn said.
The announcement has upset some fans. They question why this all-British fight is happening in America instead of at a place like Wembley Stadium.
Fury, who is 38 years old, has won 36 of his professional fights. His only losses came in back-to-back matches against Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk in 2024. He got back in the ring in July, stopping Polish fighter Mariusz Wach in a warm-up match in Pattaya, Thailand, after earlier retiring from boxing following his second loss to Usyk.
Joshua won his warm-up fight on July 25 against Kristian Prenga in Jeddah. Hearn said this victory helped move talks with Fury’s team forward.
Plans for a Fury-Joshua fight first fell apart in 2021 after a U.S. judge decided that Fury had to fight Deontay Wilder in a trilogy match instead.
