Super Eagles striker Rafiu Durosinmi made a notable impression in his first competitive match for KRC Genk. The club's coach, Jess Thorup, praised him after he scored in the 2-1 loss to Zulte Waregem on Sunday, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Thorup said, “Ito’s left-footed cross was also top-notch. But there you could see the qualities on which Durosinmi was scouted and signed.” This shows how much the coach values Durosinmi's skills.
Durosinmi scored in the 39th minute of Genk’s first game of the 2026/27 Belgian Pro League season. He rose high to head in a cross from Junya Ito, putting his team in the lead.
Sadly, Genk could not maintain that lead. Marley Aké equalised in the 82nd minute, and just four minutes later, Serxho Ujka completed Zulte Waregem’s comeback.
Even with the loss, Thorup highlighted Durosinmi's performance as a bright spot in the match. The coach noted that the striker showed why Genk made him their record signing.
Durosinmi, who is 23 years old, joined Genk from Pisa on a four-year deal that lasts until June 2030. Reports say Genk paid €10.5m for him.
Before joining Pisa, Durosinmi shone at Viktoria Plzeň. He scored 35 goals and provided 10 assists in 86 matches for the Czech team.
Genk had been looking for a long-term replacement for former Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare. Now, they will hope Durosinmi can build on his strong debut and justify their significant investment with more goals.
