Getting a hit movie doesn't mean lasting success, Tierny Olalere

Actress and filmmaker, Tierny Olalere, has said that being in a hit movie does not mean an actor will have a long career in Nollywood.

In an interview with Saturday Beats, Olalere explained that a successful movie can bring attention but does not guarantee steady work.

She said, “I had to learn the hard way that relying solely on your instincts isn’t enough, and having a moment of fame from a hit movie doesn’t mean you have ‘blown’ or permanently made it.

“A viral project or breakthrough role gives you momentary visibility, not long-term stability. If you don’t build a sustainable structure, stay disciplined and continuously push for the next milestone, that hype fades very quickly.

“You cannot relax on past applause. Survival in this industry requires constantly reinventing yourself and treating your brand like a business,” she said.

Talent and Networking

On whether talent is still enough to succeed in Nollywood, Olalere said it is no longer enough. She highlighted the importance of relationships and smart networking.

“Talent is definitely not enough anymore. Talent is simply your entry ticket; it gets you noticed, but relationships and strategic networking dictate how far you actually go.

“Knowing the right people, directors, producers, casting agents and key industry players, opens doors long before auditions are even announced. If no one knows you exist or knows what it’s like to work with you, your talent will remain hidden,” she said.

Staying True to Values

When asked if she had to choose between protecting her values and advancing her career, Olalere said she never compromised her principles for success.

“No, I haven’t had to compromise my core values to move forward, and that’s a stance I hold firmly.

“The industry will constantly test your boundaries and present shortcuts that promise faster fame or bigger roles if you’re willing to bend your principles. However, I’ve always believed that any success gained at the expense of your integrity is temporary and empty,” she said.
