At least four people lost their lives when gunmen attacked Sabon Angwa community in Bet/Zat, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State on Thursday night.
The attackers came into the community around 8 p.m. and opened fire on the residents. This happened despite a curfew in place to address the insecurity in the area.
Bulus Jok, a resident of Barkin Ladi, said the gunmen moved around freely for some time, shooting at anyone they saw.
“The gunmen struck the community around 8 p.m. despite the curfew in place and started shooting sporadically,” Mr Jok said.
He mentioned that the attack caused panic among the people, resulting in four deaths.
Mr Jok was worried that this incident happened even after an early warning was reportedly sent to the relevant authorities a day before the attack.
“It is very sad, especially as there had been an early warning alert sent to the relevant authorities a day before the attack,” he said.
Rwang Tengwong, the Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association, also confirmed what happened.
Mr Tengwong condemned the killings. He called the attack unacceptable and expressed worry about the ongoing attacks on communities despite security efforts.
He asked security agencies to increase surveillance, boost their presence in vulnerable areas, and act quickly on intelligence and early warning reports to stop more attacks.
This latest attack adds to the list of assaults on communities in Plateau State. It raises new worries about how well security measures, including curfews, are working to protect residents.
As of the time of this report, attempts to contact security officials for confirmation and more details were unsuccessful.
