Public Relations Officer Ibrahim Abdullahi shared this information in a statement on Friday. He made a copy available to newsmen.
"The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Kano State Command, has shut down an illegal diesel refining site at Panisau, Ungoggo Local Government Area of Kano State, arresting five suspects over the alleged operation of an unregistered and illegal oil and gas business," the statement said.
According to the statement, the suspects were arrested during a joint operation. Personnel from the Operations Department, oil and gas unit, armed squad, and anti-vandalism teams took part in the operation.
The five suspects are Ibrahim Bello, 28; Musbahu Adam, 38; Rabiu Dahiru, 27; Haruna Kabiru, 26; and Sunusi Ahmad, 25.
"The operation is part of the Command’s ongoing fight against economic sabotage, protecting the environment, and enforcing laws related to oil and gas operations," the statement added.
After the operation, the illegal refining site was sealed off. Investigations are ongoing to find out more about the illegal activities and decide on legal actions against the suspects.
The command warned that illegal refining is a serious threat to public safety and the environment. It can cause pollution, environmental damage, and other hazards. Such activities also harm legitimate businesses and threaten Nigeria's economic interests.
The command reaffirmed its dedication to fighting illegal activities that endanger public safety, the environment, and the economy. They urged the public to report any suspicious activities to security agencies to help combat economic sabotage.
The Command promised that investigations would be thorough. Anyone found guilty will face the full force of the law.
