How Premier League Teams Handle Transfer Deadline

Premier League teams have strict rules for player transfers, especially on deadline day when many deals happen at the last minute.

The deal sheet is key for teams finalizing transfers near the deadline. It helps a team confirm that an agreement is in place while giving it extra time to submit the rest of the paperwork.

For an 11pm deadline, teams can submit a deal sheet starting from 9pm, and it must arrive before the transfer window ends. Once submitted, the team has until 1am to send the full documents.

But for international transfers, they still need to meet FIFA’s midnight deadline using the Transfer Matching System.

To register a player, a team must send the needed documents to the Premier League. These documents include the player’s contract, transfer agreement, work-permit proof when needed, international clearance for overseas transfers, and any transfer levy that applies.

The Premier League checks these documents against its own rules and those of the Football Association and FIFA, if relevant.

International deals need to be entered into FIFA’s Transfer Matching System. The buying team uploads the transfer details, while the selling team confirms them.

After the information is verified, the relevant football associations process the international clearance before the player can be registered.

Players who need work permission in the UK must have that approval before they can be registered.

Teams need to apply for the necessary permit before the transfer window closes. Players who don't automatically meet the criteria may have their cases looked at by an FA Exceptions Panel.

Premier League teams cannot register players who are partly owned by third parties.

A team must fully own a player’s registration and economic rights before the player can be officially registered.

If a team misses the deadline, the Premier League Board can refuse the application or approve it with conditions.

This makes it important to submit documents accurately and on time, especially on deadline day when many transfers can come in quickly.

Finishing a transfer before the window closes doesn't automatically mean a player can play in the next match.

During a transfer window, the necessary registration papers generally must reach the Premier League by 12 noon on the last working day before the team’s next match.

The international transfer certificate and proof of eligibility to work in the UK, if needed, can be sent later but must arrive before the player is eligible to play.
