Hrgovic sets terms for rematch with Itauma

IBF heavyweight champion Filip Hrgovic has stated he will only give Moses Itauma a rematch after he becomes the undisputed heavyweight world champion. Hrgovic stopped Itauma in the ninth round on August 29 to win the vacant world title. The 34-year-old was seen as the underdog, and his win was one of the biggest surprises of the year in boxing.

Itauma, who was seen as the next big thing and the second-youngest heavyweight world champion, dominated the early rounds and even scored a knockdown. But he got tired badly before the fight ended.

The 21-year-old Itauma was unbeaten before this match and has a record of 14 wins, 1 loss, with 12 knockouts. He has made it clear that he wants to fight Hrgovic again.

Speaking to Ring Magazine, Hrgovic said he has not received any request for a rematch and explained his conditions. He said, “No, (they) never (asked for a rematch with me). When I become undisputed (champion), I will give him a rematch.”

Hrgovic is set to make his first mandatory defense in early 2027. He is linked with a fight against Cuba’s Frank Sanchez, which would be the first heavyweight title fight ever held in Croatia. Sanchez had earlier agreed to step aside for the vacant title fight with Itauma.

If Hrgovic beats Sanchez, he might face Daniel Dubois in a unification rematch. The winner is expected to go after WBC champion Agit Kabayel to hold three belts. The WBA super title will be on the line when Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua meet in December.

Meanwhile, Itauma is expected to return to the ring in January. His promoter, Frank Warren, said, “January’s looking like the date,” and he wants Itauma to face a well-known opponent first. Warren said the opponent would be announced in a couple of weeks. He is also aiming for at least three fights for Itauma in 2027, with a possible fourth fight.
