On June 15, 1982, Hungary made history. They became the only team to score 10 goals in a single men’s World Cup match. They defeated El Salvador 10-1 in their first game at the tournament in Spain. That nine-goal winning margin is still a joint World Cup record.
László Kiss was the star of that amazing game. He came off the bench in the second half and scored a hat-trick. This is the only World Cup hat-trick scored by a substitute. It also remains the fastest hat-trick in the tournament's history. Kiss scored his three goals in just seven minutes.
