Nigeria Bags Eighth Gold at Commonwealth Games Thanks to Enekwechi

Nigeria's strong showing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games continued on Thursday. Chukwuebuka Enekwechi won the country’s eighth gold medal in the men’s shot put final.

The African record holder achieved a best throw of 21.07m. He beat New Zealand’s Tom Walsh, who took silver with 21.03m. England’s Scott Lincoln secured bronze with a throw of 20.99m.

This victory adds to Enekwechi’s impressive career. It also highlights Nigeria’s strength in field events at the Glasgow Games.

Enekwechi made his intentions clear a day before. He needed just one throw of 20.03m in the qualification round to secure his spot in the final. With confidence, he came back for the medal event and performed when it mattered, overcoming tough competition from two skilled rivals.

His win brings Team Nigeria’s gold medal count to eight at the Games. This continues a memorable streak that features many record-breaking performances.

Nigeria’s medal tally has been boosted by amazing efforts in para powerlifting, weightlifting, and athletics.

Earlier in the Games, Esther Nworgu, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, Riluwan Idris, Edidiong Umoafia, Onome Didih, Rafiatu Folashade Lawal, and Goodness Nwachukwu all won gold. Many of them also set Commonwealth Games, Commonwealth, and world records.

Nwachukwu stood out on Wednesday. She broke her own F42 world record to win the women’s F42-44/F61-64 discus title. This helped Nigeria stay the top African nation on the medals table.

Now, the focus turns to the track. World record holder Tobi Amusan is looking to win another Commonwealth Games title in the women’s 100m hurdles. Samuel Ogazi, Edidiong Udo, and Ella Onojuvwevwo are set to compete in the 400m finals.
