At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Senegal’s young star Ibrahim Mbaye has made history as one of the youngest goalscorers ever in the tournament. He joins a list of football legends with this achievement.
FIFA announced the youngest scorers in World Cup history today. Mbaye is now fourth on the all-time list after scoring at just 18 years and 143 days old. This makes him the youngest African to score in the World Cup and one of the youngest globally.
This isn’t the first time he has broken records. On 23 December 2025, he played Senegal’s first game in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations against Botswana. At 17 years, 10 months, and 29 days old, he became the youngest Senegalese to play in that tournament.
On 3 January 2026, he scored again for Senegal in a 3-1 victory over Sudan in the round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations. This goal made him, at 17 years, 11 months, and 10 days, the youngest player to score for Senegal in that event.
Pelé’s Record Still Stands
At the top of the list is Brazilian legend Pelé. His record has lasted nearly 70 years. Pelé scored at the age of 17 years and 239 days during the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. This moment marked the start of one of football’s greatest careers.
Pelé’s achievements are the standard by which every young World Cup star is judged.
Mbaye Enters Elite Circle
Only three players are ranked higher than Mbaye. Manuel Rosas from Mexico scored at 18 years and 93 days. Spain’s Gavi scored at 18 years and 110 days during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Mbaye’s goal at 18 years and 143 days places him ahead of famous players like Michael Owen from England, who shocked the world with his goal against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup.
The Senegalese player is also ahead of Romanian forward Kovács (18 years, 197 days), Russia’s Sychev (18 years, 231 days), Spain’s Lamine Yamal (18 years, 343 days), Argentina’s Lionel Messi (18 years, 357 days), and American player Green (19 years, 25 days).

A New Milestone for Africa
The PSG forward’s success is significant beyond just the records. Africa has produced many World Cup stars; from Roger Milla and Jay-Jay Okocha to Samuel Eto’o, Didier Drogba, Asamoah Gyan, and Sadio Mané. But very few have made their mark at such a young age.
Mbaye’s goal against France not only secured his spot in World Cup history but also showed the growth of African youth programs. This new generation is ready to compete with the big football nations.
For Senegal, a country known for its football talents over the last two decades, Mbaye’s rise is another exciting chapter in its football story.
Following the Path of Legends
The names around Mbaye are impressive. Pelé is considered one of the greatest players ever. Messi is a World Cup winner and has won the Ballon d’Or eight times. Owen became a star for England, while Yamal is seen as a future star.
History doesn’t promise success, but making this list at just 18 years old is a strong statement. The World Cup often makes stars quickly. Mbaye is the latest teenager to grab this chance.
We will see if this goal leads to a legendary career. What we know for sure is that this young Senegalese player has made his mark in football history with some of the greatest names the sport has seen. And for a teenager just starting out, this could be just the beginning.
