Ivory Coast star Yan Diomande has made a mark in African football at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He is now part of a rare group that includes Nigerian football great Sunday Oliseh. Diomande is only the second African man to play in four World Cup matches while still a teenager.
The 19-year-old winger from RB Leipzig reached this milestone even though Ivory Coast faced a tough exit from the tournament. Norway's Erling Haaland scored a late goal to give his team a two-one win in the Round of 32. This loss ended the Elephants’ best-ever World Cup journey at the knockout stage.
The only other African man to reach this feat was Oliseh. He played all four matches for Nigeria in the 1994 World Cup in the United States at the age of 19. Oliseh stood out as one of the best young midfielders as Nigeria made its memorable debut on the world stage.
Oliseh was a key player for the Super Eagles. He played as a deep-lying midfielder and hardly missed any time in those four matches. He averaged over five tackles and nine ball recoveries each game. He also completed more than 80 percent of his passes, helping Nigeria control the game during a campaign that ended in a heartbreaking extra-time loss to Italy in the round of 16.
His strong performances before turning 20 helped him gain international recognition and opened doors for a successful club career in Europe.
Now, more than thirty years later, Diomande has joined this select group, though his exit was painful for the African champions. Ivory Coast entered the knockout stage with high hopes after a good group stage. They played well against Norway, finishing with 14 shots compared to Norway’s nine and winning 14 corner kicks. Diomande impressed during the group stage with his fearless dribbling and maturity. He created one of Ivory Coast's best chances with a dangerous cross in the first half, but Norway's defense limited his impact.
Norway's Antonio Nusa opened the scoring first. Then, Manchester United's Amad Diallo came off the bench and made a fantastic goal. He skillfully dribbled past defenders and scored a stunning equalizer that quickly became a top contender for goal of the tournament. This goal made Diallo the third African player to score twice as a substitute in a single World Cup, following in the footsteps of Cameroon’s Roger Milla and Senegal’s Pape Gueye.
But the celebrations did not last long for Ivory Coast. Just after they equalized, Haaland showed why he is one of the best finishers in the world. He scored at the far post from Patrick Berg’s low cross, sealing a two-one victory for Norway. This win gave Norway their first World Cup knockout victory since 1998 and set up a match against Brazil in the Round of 16.
While this defeat ended Ivory Coast’s World Cup journey, Diomande has gained a lot from this experience. Last season, he had 12 goals and nine assists in 33 Bundesliga matches for RB Leipzig, helping them qualify for the UEFA Champions League. His performance has caught the eye of many top clubs in Europe.
