George Ilenikhena’s great start at Al-Ittihad has earned him his first call to the Super Eagles. The striker from Lagos is very proud to represent Nigeria.
The 20-year-old player has previously played for Amiens, Royal Antwerp, and Monaco. After joining Al-Ittihad in the Saudi Pro League, he quickly caught attention with his performances. His form got him a spot in Éric Chelle’s 24-man squad for Nigeria’s first 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
For Ilenikhena, this call-up means much more than just being recognized for his club play.
“It is an honour, and I am very proud to wear the shirt because I was born here. It’s a big thing to represent the country,” he shared.
He said that telling his parents was one of his first reactions after getting the invitation.
“When I had my first call-up, I called my mom and my dad,” he said.
Ilenikhena is excited to finally play for Nigeria. He wants to show fans what he can do.
“To be honest, I’m very happy, really excited to be here and represent Nigeria and show the fans my quality,” he said.
He also promised to give his all whenever he gets the chance to play for the three-time African champions.
“I will give my best and show everybody that I am ready to play.”
While this call-up is a personal achievement, Ilenikhena is already looking ahead to winning trophies with the Super Eagles.
“My personal goal is to win all the tournaments we, the Super Eagles, play in,” he added.
