Despite being injured and out for two weeks, Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen made it to Nigeria's squad for the upcoming matches. Saudi Arabia-based forward George Ilenikhena also received his first call-up to the Super Eagles. They will play in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle selected two different squads for this window. Nigeria will also play an international friendly against Russia in Novgorod.
The three-time African champions will kick off their 2027 AFCON qualifying journey against Madagascar in Uyo on Friday, September 25. They will then travel to face Guinea-Bissau on September 29.
For their first competitive match since the last AFCON in Morocco, Chelle named captain Wilfred Ndidi, Osimhen, goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, defender Semi Ajayi, midfielder Alex Iwobi, and forwards Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon in his 24-man squad.
The coach also called up goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, defenders Calvin Bassey and Bright Osayi-Samuel, midfielders Frank Onyeka and Raphael Onyedika, and forwards Samuel Chukwueze, Akor Adams, and Tolu Arokodare.
England-based defenders Olaoluwa Aina and Benjamin Fredricks are back in the squad. Unity Cup stars Arthur Okonkwo and Chibuike Nwaiwu will compete for spots alongside the more experienced players.
Ilenikhena, Moses Usor, and Portugal-based defender Isaac James have also received their first call-ups to the senior national team.
Ilenikhena decided to play for Nigeria after representing France at the youth level. The friendly match against Russia will allow Chelle to test new players while mixing them with some veterans.
