India is leading the medals table at the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos. They have won five gold medals from nine events decided so far. The competition reached its third day on Wednesday, August 11, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
England follows with two gold medals. Cyprus and the host nation Nigeria both have one gold medal each. Nigeria's gold came from 17-year-old Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson. His win in the men’s U-23 epee event is Nigeria’s first-ever gold medal at the Commonwealth Championships.
India's total includes seven silver medals and 12 bronze medals. England has added one silver and five bronze medals to their two golds. Australia rounds out the top five with one silver and one bronze.
The atmosphere at Rugby School Nigeria in Atlantic City, Victoria Island, Lagos, was filled with energy on the third day. The sound of blades clashing, cheers from supporters, and flags from across the Commonwealth created a lively scene.
On Tuesday, history will be made as wheelchair fencing makes its debut as a medal event. The sport was shown as a demonstration in London in 2022. Its inclusion this year shows a new age of inclusivity and opportunities.
For Nigeria, hosting the championships for the first time is a great achievement. The country has a team of 12 athletes, six men and six women, competing against teams from South Africa, India, and more.
Athletes have praised the organization and warm welcome in Lagos. Fencers from South Africa, England, Australia, and India have commended the Local Organising Committee for their efficiency in handling accreditation and logistics.
Bethany Brierley, the women’s sabre gold medallist from England, captured the event's spirit. She said, “I am enjoying myself in Lagos because the environment is inspiring and the people are very friendly.
“The enthusiasm of the young Nigerian fencers shows they are working hard to raise the profile of the sport as a developing nation.”
