The Independent National Electoral Commission has named Major Agbo as the new National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party. He replaces the factional chairman, Bala Yusuf.
This announcement came during a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday.
Our checks confirmed that Agbo’s name is now on INEC’s portal as the party’s national chairman.
The electoral commission also updated its records with the names of the party’s National Working Committee members. This includes National Secretary Olaposi Oginni, National Treasurer Prince Adetoyese Omokanye, National Financial Secretary Anthony Apugo, and National Legal Adviser Asuquo Ibok.
This change marks an important shift in the leadership struggle that has affected the opposition party since the 2023 general election. Different factions have been claiming control of the party's leadership.
Speaking to reporters, Agbo said this update on INEC’s portal shows that his leadership is now recognized.
He stated, "I am pleased to formally announce that the complete upload of the duly recognised National Working Committee under my leadership has been concluded by INEC."
He added, "This development reinforces the legitimacy of the leadership of our great party and strengthens our preparations for future political activities. Indeed, the era of betrayal of trust is over as Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Buba Galadima have since gone their ways. We wish them all the best in their future political endeavours."
Agbo expressed confidence in the judiciary, saying they have upheld justice in the face of challenges.
"We were sure that the judiciary would do justice to the issues and we are indeed not disappointed. They proved to be truly the last hope of the common man, rose to the occasion, defended our democracy and rule of law in the face of avoidable threats,” he said.
He also revealed that the party is getting ready for the 2027 general elections now that INEC has recognized the new leadership.
"Following this achievement, the party has commenced the process of uploading candidates for the 2027 general elections in accordance with the timetable and guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission after receiving the access code recently."
Agbo continued, "We are determined to present competent, credible and people-oriented candidates who will champion good governance and national development in line with our manifesto. The NNPP remains open to every patriotic Nigerian who desires positive change."
He called for stronger efforts to tackle the country's security issues and asked INEC to stay neutral ahead of the next general election.
"We must join hands with the Federal Government to tackle the challenge of insecurity in Nigeria. However, we call on the FG and all security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve inter-agency collaboration and deploy every lawful means necessary to restore peace and protect the lives of Nigerians."
Agbo urged INEC to stay committed to conducting free, fair, credible and transparent elections in 2027.
"The confidence of Nigerians in the democratic process depends largely on the integrity, independence and professionalism of the electoral umpire."
When contacted for a response, Yusuf acknowledged the announcement.
The factional national chairman said he could not discuss the matter in detail at this time.
"Yes, I am aware. However, I don’t have enough time to discuss the details. Right now, I am in transit. When I come to Abuja. I will release a statement," he said.
