The factional National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Agbo Major, shared worries on Thursday about ongoing fights over the party’s leadership. He warned that these unresolved issues might hurt democracy as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
At a press conference in Abuja, Major said the NNPP is dedicated to following the law and its constitution when dealing with matters of membership, discipline, and leadership.
He stated, "The New Nigeria Peoples Party is a law-abiding political organisation guided by its constitution and the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria."
"Decisions relating to membership, discipline, and leadership are governed by established procedures and not by the personal interests of any individual."
Major mentioned that the party has noticed attempts to create confusion regarding its real leadership, even with legal developments and court rulings on the issue.
"Our position remains clear and consistent. We are particularly concerned that despite various legal developments and judicial pronouncements relating to the affairs of our party, there are still attempts to accord recognition to individuals and groups whose status within the NNPP remains a subject of serious dispute," he said.
Agbo emphasized that institutions responsible for protecting democracy must stay neutral and follow the law.
"It is our belief that institutions entrusted with safeguarding democracy must remain neutral, impartial, and faithful to the rule of law. Democracy can only flourish when public institutions operate without fear or favour," he added.
He pointed out that some individuals claiming to represent the party no longer speak for its proper leadership. He called for a fair review of the issues affecting the party’s unity.
"The NNPP maintains that certain individuals who continue to parade themselves as representatives of the party no longer speak for the legitimate leadership of the organization," he said.
As the country prepares for the 2027 elections, Major urged political actors and groups forming alliances to deal with internal issues openly.
"As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 General Elections, political actors must understand that actions taken today will have far-reaching consequences for the future of our democracy."
"No political alliance can succeed on the foundation of unresolved internal contradictions," he noted.
He also urged the judiciary to keep fulfilling its constitutional role to enhance public trust in democratic institutions.
He remarked, "The judiciary must continue to uphold its constitutional responsibility as the last hope of the common man."
"Where there are allegations of disregard for judicial decisions, appropriate mechanisms within the law should be activated to preserve public confidence in democratic institutions."
According to him, Nigeria’s democracy can only grow through respect for constitutional principles, accountability of institutions, and following the law.
"Nigeria’s democracy is bigger than any individual, political party, or institution."
"The survival of our democratic system depends on respect for the rule of law, institutional accountability, and adherence to constitutional principles," he stated.
Major confirmed the NNPP’s commitment to building a stronger political platform and finding lawful ways to protect the party’s identity and future.
"The NNPP remains committed to building a stronger political platform that promotes national unity, economic prosperity, social justice, and good governance for all Nigerians."
"We will continue to pursue all lawful avenues to protect the identity, integrity, and future of our great party," he added.
Finally, Major urged party supporters across the country to stay peaceful and dedicated to democratic values.
"To our supporters across the country, I urge you to remain peaceful, vigilant, and committed to the democratic process. Truth, justice, and the rule of law will always prevail," he concluded.
