Thirty years after Nigeria won its first Olympic football gold medal, three stars from the famous 1996 "Dream Team" have finally been recognized by their home state, Kaduna.
Governor Uba Sani awarded former Super Eagles players Daniel Amokachi, Emmanuel Babayaro, and Garba Lawal with plots of land and street names in Kaduna on Tuesday.
These three players were part of the Nigerian team that made history at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, USA.
Their visit to the Kaduna Government House was a courtesy call on Mr Sani. During the visit, the governor acknowledged their contributions to Nigerian football and their part in the country’s Olympic success.
The Atlanta Triumph
Nigeria's victory at the 1996 Olympics is one of the proudest moments in African football.
The Nigerian team, known as the "Dream Team," defeated Mexico 2, 0 in the quarter-finals. They then made a stunning comeback against Brazil in the semi-finals, coming from 3, 1 down to win 4, 3 with a dramatic extra-time goal from Victor Ikpeba.
This win led them to a final against Argentina.
Once again, Nigeria came from behind to defeat the Argentinians 3, 2, with Emmanuel Amunike scoring the winning goal in the last moments of the match.
This victory made Nigeria the first African nation to win the Olympic men's football gold medal.
It was also a defining moment for many Nigerian footballers, who went on to have successful careers both in Europe and with the national team.
Three Decades of Delay
Even with this historic win, the players expressed that promises made to them after returning from Atlanta were not kept for many years.
When we came back, the federal and state governments promised us a plot of land and a street name.
"Thirty years now, none were fulfilled," Amokachi said, speaking for the others.
However, they noted that the governor has now made good on that promise at the state level by giving them plots of land and naming streets after them in Kaduna.
This gesture is especially meaningful since Amokachi, Babayaro, and Lawal all have ties to Kaduna and represented both the state and Nigeria during their careers.
About Amokachi, Babayaro, and Lawal
Amokachi, known as "The Bull," was among Nigeria’s most famous footballers of his time. He played in Europe and was a key member of the national team in the 1990s.
Babayaro was one of the youngest players in the Atlanta squad and later had a successful career in England, especially with Chelsea.
Lawal was also a vital player on the Olympic-winning team and the Super Eagles, representing Nigeria in major international competitions.
Their success was part of a golden era for Nigerian football, which also saw Nigeria win the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994 and make its FIFA World Cup debut that same year.
For Kaduna, these three players are a big part of the state’s football history.
Mr Sani's decision to honor them three decades after their Olympic success is more than just giving them land and street names. It shows formal recognition for a generation of athletes whose achievements brought pride and attention to Nigeria and Kaduna.
The 1996 Olympic gold is still one of Nigeria’s greatest sporting achievements. For Amokachi, Babayaro, and Lawal, the recognition from Kaduna State means that after 30 years, at least one promise made after their historic win has finally been kept.
