Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has signed a new law to create the Kaduna State College of Post-Basic Nursing Sciences in Rigasa, Igabi Local Government Area. This move aims to tackle the shortage of specialist nurses and improve healthcare in the state.
The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed Maiyaki, shared this news in a statement on Wednesday. He called the college a key investment in developing skilled workers as part of the state government's health sector reforms.
The college will focus on advanced nursing education. It will train specialists in important areas and enhance maternal and child healthcare, emergency response, and intensive care services throughout Kaduna.
Under the Kaduna State College of Post-Basic Nursing Sciences, Rigasa Law, 2026, this new college will function as a specialized tertiary training institution with its main campus based in Rigasa. The law also allows for the creation of more campuses, schools, and training centers, pending regulatory approvals.
Maiyaki mentioned that the college will offer specialized programs in midwifery, psychiatric and mental health nursing, perioperative nursing, pediatric nursing, accident and emergency nursing, intensive care nursing, public health nursing, and nursing administration.
He explained that the governor's approval of this legislation aims to strengthen the state's healthcare workforce. It addresses the shortage of personnel and boosts clinical skills.
Besides training, the college will support research, continuous professional development, and collaborations with teaching hospitals, universities, specialized facilities, and other accredited institutions.
The law also sets up a Governing Council to guide the college and oversee its operations. An Academic Board will ensure high standards in research and professional training are maintained.
Maiyaki added that all programs at the college will meet the accreditation and regulatory standards set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and other relevant bodies.
The creation of this college is part of the broader healthcare reform agenda by the Kaduna State Government. This agenda includes upgrading 255 primary healthcare centers, renovating 16 general hospitals, and investing in recruiting and developing healthcare workers.
He said that investments in healthcare facilities need to be matched with qualified professionals who can provide specialized medical services, especially in areas that lack sufficient healthcare.
Maiyaki stated that the college will help create a group of specialist nurses, strengthen healthcare institutions, and improve health outcomes in the state.
The statement also mentioned that the state government is dedicated to making the college a center of excellence for specialist nursing education, research, and clinical training. This initiative aligns with Uba Sani’s vision to improve access to quality healthcare services for the people of Kaduna State.
