The Kano State Government has arrested over 380 suspects and secured more than 230 convictions in the first two months of its crackdown on drug abuse and trafficking.
Governor Abba Yusuf shared this information on Thursday during the 66th Independence Anniversary celebration at the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium in Kano.
"We have arrested over 380 suspects and secured more than 230 convictions in the first two months of the state’s campaign against drug abuse and illicit trafficking," Yusuf stated.
He mentioned that the state government set up the Kano State Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in July 2026. An Executive Order was issued to boost the fight against drugs, thuggery, and other related crimes.
These numbers match what the chairman of the task force, Muhuyi Gado, said in September. Gado reported that the committee had arrested over 380 suspects and secured over 230 convictions since it started on July 22.
"The Task Force has also broken down drug joints and hideouts across the state since it was formed," the governor added.
Yusuf described the fight against drug abuse and crime as a job for everyone. He emphasized that the government, security agencies, traditional leaders, religious leaders, communities, parents, and citizens all have a role to play.
He urged young people to turn away from drugs, violence, and crime. Instead, he encouraged them to focus on education, agriculture, technology, entrepreneurship, vocational training, and the creative industries.
"Drug abuse and crime are not just the government's problem. It needs everyone’s effort, including security agencies, traditional institutions, religious leaders, communities, parents, and all citizens," Yusuf said.
The governor promised that his administration would keep backing security agencies, enhance community-based intelligence, and tackle the social problems that lead to crime and insecurity.
He also called on residents to share useful information with security agencies to help prevent and combat crime in the state.
Yusuf reaffirmed the government’s dedication to building a safer environment where young people can engage in legal activities and contribute positively to Kano State’s growth.
The task force's earlier actions included joint operations targeting drug joints and hideouts. Authorities reported recovering various illegal substances and dangerous weapons during these operations.
The task force has combined enforcement with rehabilitation and public awareness campaigns, according to its chairman. They reported that about 125 individuals have been sent for rehabilitation at the Kano Reformatory Institute in Kiru.
