The police have arrested a leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Aminu Warkal. He was caught on video showing a firearm at a political event in Kano State.
Mr Warkal was filmed firing shots into the air during a rally in the Janbulo area of Gwale Local Government Area.
The police spokesperson in Kano, Abdullahi Kiyawa, said in a statement that officers on routine cyber patrol found a viral video. The video shows Mr Warkal displaying what looks like a pump-action rifle in front of a crowd.
Mr Kiyawa noted that this action breaks the Firearms Act and poses a danger to public safety.
"The alleged unlawful display of a firearm, if proven, is a clear violation of the Firearms Act. It can create fear, intimidate the public, and disturb peace and security," the statement said.
"Following a directive from the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, Mr Warkal was called to the Command Headquarters in Bompai, Kano.
"He is currently being questioned by detectives at the State Intelligence Department (SID).
In response to the situation, Mr Bakori warned against political thuggery and showing weapons. He stressed that no one is above the law.
"He urged political actors, party supporters, and stakeholders in the state to keep order and follow the Electoral Act, the Firearms Act, and other laws that govern public conduct," Mr Kiyawa added.
The police assured residents that they are dedicated to protecting lives and property before, during, and after the political season.
