Members of the Kebbi State House of Assembly on Wednesday picked Salihu Dangoje as their new speaker. This follows the death of the former speaker, Muhammad Usman, in April.
Mr Dangoje, who represents the Sakaba Constituency, has been sworn in.
The motion for his nomination was put forward by Muhammad Adamu and supported by Lauwal Haruna during a plenary session of the House.
After a unanimous vote from the lawmakers, Mr Dangoje took the oath of office from the Clerk of the House, Suleiman Shamaki.
In his acceptance speech, the new speaker thanked his colleagues for trusting him with the role. He promised to lead in a way that includes everyone and strengthens the legislative arm of government.
He also sent his condolences to the family of the late speaker, the Zuru Emirate, and the people of Kebbi State for their loss.
Mr Dangoje assured everyone of his open-door policy. He highlighted the importance of unity, cooperation, and commitment in pushing the state’s legislative agenda forward.
He expressed gratitude to Governor Nasir Idris and the people of Kebbi State for their support of democracy and the state’s growth.
Mr Usman died on April 6 at a hospital in Cairo, Egypt, where he was being treated for a long illness.
The late Mr Usman became the speaker of the 10th Assembly on June 8, 2023. His seat had been vacant until Mr Dangoje was elected.
