Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté has revealed that personal tragedies affected his performance during the 2025, 26 season. He shared his thoughts on a tough season for him, both on and off the pitch.
Konaté made 51 appearances for Liverpool, starting 49 of those matches. He was a regular in the team but found it hard to play at the same high level he did in previous seasons. The club ended the season in fifth place in the Premier League.
The 27-year-old has played for the France national team 27 times and remains part of Didier Deschamps’ squad as France gets ready for the World Cup.
On Thursday, BBC Sport reported that Konaté reflected on his challenging season. He spoke about several personal losses that left him emotionally drained while trying to perform well.
"There was never a moment when I felt like I was on the mend. All of these tragic events happened so quickly and as soon as I felt like I was getting my head above water, something else happened," he shared.
Despite these challenges, Konaté mentioned that he leaned on the support of those around him. He also felt a strong duty to keep pushing for his team.
"I had the support of all these fans, who are exceptional at Liverpool, my team-mates and especially my family but I also had to learn how to get back on my feet on my own because the team needed me more than ever and I know that my father would have wanted me to get back," he emphasized.
Konaté’s words show the emotional pressure he faced last season. Even with these struggles, he remained a vital part of Liverpool’s defense and continued to represent France on the international stage.
