The Labour Party in Anambra State has finished its primary elections for the 2027 general elections. They have picked candidates for the Senate and the House of Representatives.
On Thursday, the party Chairman, Peter Okoye, shared this news with journalists in Awka. He said the primaries used the Option A4 voting system and had strong participation from members, delegates, aspirants, and stakeholders.
Okoye mentioned that the elections were peaceful and clear. He said this shows the party’s dedication to internal democracy and grassroots involvement.
He promised the candidates that the party leadership and members will work hard to help them win in the 2027 elections. He added that the candidates were confirmed by most members and delegates at a special nomination congress. This congress followed the Labour Party's Constitution, the Electoral Act 2026, and the Labour Party Electoral Guidelines 2026.
He said, "We expressed joy that the exercise was peaceful and transparent and reflected the party’s commitment to internal democracy and grassroots participation."
He continued, "The exercise was conducted through the ‘Option A4’ voting system, and it witnessed strong participation by our members, delegates, aspirants and stakeholders."
"We assure our candidates that the leadership and members of the party will work hard to secure victory for all of them during the 2027 general elections."
The candidates chosen for the Senate and House of Representatives are Venerable Tochukwu Ikezue for Anambra Central Senatorial District; Chief Ikenna Okafor for Nnewi North, Nnewi South, and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency; Mrs Ifeoma Obiokoye for Anaocha, Dunukofia, and Njikoka Federal Constituency; and Ujunwa Onyekachi for Awka North and South Federal Constituency.
Mr Iduma-Christian Mayor, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee and Returning Officer for the primaries, announced the candidates as winners. He noted that the candidates ran as the only aspirants of the party.
Officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission monitored the exercise.
Venerable Tochukwu Ikezue, the party’s candidate for Anambra Central Senatorial District, thanked INEC for overseeing the process. He promised that if elected in 2027, he would address the erosion issues affecting the senatorial zone, empower many constituents, and lead in an open and inclusive way.
