The Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Sunday Okereke, has shared his plans for Nigeria's governance. He wants to restructure the federal system, boost local governments, and change the economy from a palliative one to a productive one.
Mr Okereke spoke during a roadshow in Arochukwu Kingdom, in the Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State. He also asked for support for Governor Alex Otti and other Labour Party candidates as the 2027 general elections approach.
He said his governance plan includes zero-based budgeting and resetting Nigeria’s governance structure. He also has a vision called “Nigerians First Vision,” which aims for inclusion and participatory governance.
Mr Okereke wants to expand the federal character concept beyond just ethnicity. He wants it to cover other groups, including young people, women, and persons with disabilities.
“I have spent years studying systems and designing systems and governance architecture, supporting institutional design and framework,” Mr Okereke said. This explains why he is running for president.
He believes that democracy should lead to real improvements in people's lives, not just be about elections.
“Democracy must deliver happiness to the Nigerian people. Democracy must improve the lives of people,” he said.
Mr Okereke also connected governance results to how elected bodies are made up. He said that when governors lack support from the legislature, it can affect executive programs.
He urged voters in Abia to support LP candidates in the upcoming elections.
He specifically mentioned support for the party’s candidates: David Bourdex for Abia North Senatorial seat, Ibe Osonwa for Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency, and Uchenna Okoro for Arochukwu State Constituency.
He believes that having coordinated representatives in both executive and legislative positions will help governments carry out their development plans more effectively.
At this event, Mr Okereke also praised the Otti administration. He stated that it has gained attention beyond Abia State.
He called Abia an example from which national governance can learn. But his claims about improvements in the state’s human development and happiness were not verified at the event.
Mr Okereke encouraged Nigerians to get more involved in elections. He asked them to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) if they haven’t done so.
He pointed out that the choices made by elected officials affect citizens and the environment where businesses operate.
The roadshow included LP supporters and local residents. They marched through Arochukwu with banners, posters, and placards supporting Mr Otti and the party’s candidates.
At the event, the traditional ruler of Arochukwu Kingdom, Eberechukwu Oji, prayed for Mr Okereke and wished him success in his presidential campaign.
Mr Oji reminded the candidate to respect due process and the rule of law throughout his campaign.
