The Lagos State Police Command has revealed plans to begin a statewide crackdown on vehicles that have covered, unclear, unauthorized, damaged, or missing number plates. This move is part of efforts to boost security and reduce crime in the state.
The police spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, shared this information in a statement on Sunday. He said this action follows a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu. The aim is to improve public safety and stop criminal elements from hiding their identities.
The enforcement will start on Monday, June 15, 2026. The Commissioner of Police for Lagos State, CP Tijani Fatai, will supervise the operation.
CP Tijani has instructed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers across the state to ensure full compliance in their areas.
Any vehicle found breaking this rule will be impounded. It will also undergo a thorough investigation according to existing laws and procedures.
“The Command wishes to assure members of the public that this enforcement exercise is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding motorists.
“Rather, it is a proactive security measure designed to enhance the capacity of Police operatives to identify vehicles, investigate crimes, track criminal suspects, and strengthen the overall security architecture of the State,” the statement read.
The police urged motorists, transport operators, and fleet owners to ensure their vehicles have valid, properly issued, and clearly visible registration number plates at all times. Vehicle owners were also advised to keep their documents up to date and available for inspection when needed.
Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the command said, “The Command remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting lives and property and creating a safer environment for all residents and visitors in the State.”
The police also called on residents to support this initiative. They should stay alert and report any suspicious persons, vehicles, or activities through emergency lines. Effective policing relies on public cooperation.
