The Oyo State Police Command announced on Friday that it has started a statewide operation to crack down on unmarked vehicles, fake number plates, and unauthorized coverings of vehicle plates.
The police shared this news through its spokesperson, Olayinka Ayanlade, in Ibadan, the state capital.
This operation began on Thursday. The goal is to make sure vehicles follow proper identification standards. The police want to improve public safety and security in the state.
The statement said, "To ensure a safer environment and to support ongoing efforts against violent crime and other criminal activities, we have launched a statewide operation targeting unmarked vehicles, fake and obscured number plates, as well as unauthorized covering of vehicle plates."
"Anyone caught breaking these rules will be arrested. Their vehicles or motorcycles will be seized according to the law and our procedures."
"We will also continue stop-and-search operations, patrols based on intelligence, and raids in areas known for criminal activities. There will be more police presence in both urban and rural areas."
These steps are part of a larger plan to discourage crime, improve response times, and build public trust in the police.
The police asked residents to stay calm and cooperate with officers during these operations. They emphasized that these measures are for everyone's safety and security.
The police appreciated the support and understanding of the community. They assured that all operations will be done professionally, within the law, and with respect for human rights.
Using fake, obscured, or improperly registered number plates is a big security issue in many parts of Nigeria, including Oyo state.
Security agencies have often linked these practices to crime. Such actions help offenders avoid identification, tracking, and arrest.
